| Stefanie Beals Recently, I’ve been realizing the significance of a smile. It spreads joy, gives encouragement, and shows Christ’s love. Plus seeing these smiles everyday makes God’s work in the student’s hearts so evident. Praise the Lord for His molding and shaping of these soft hearts. As I mentioned in my last letter, Kioney accepted Christ into her heart in December, and it’s been wonderful watching her understand more and more who God is and what He expects of her (especially in the area of obedience.) She does not come from a Christian family and, in fact, each weekend Jehovah Witnesses visit her and her brother (Saul). Please pray that God will keep her little heart guarded from these influences, and that we will have more opportunities to share the Gospel with her mom and grandmother.
In the end of February, we added a new student to the school. Her name is Selena. She is thirteen years old, but has the language ability of a kindergartner. Behaviorally, she acts like four year old Saul! God has given us such an opportunity with this teenager; please keep her and ESD teachers in your prayers. Pray for wisdom and opportunities for sharing God’s love.
My time with Saul has certainly been influencing me as much as it is him! I’m learning the best ways to teach him...and ways that definitely don’t work! Every day includes practicing the basics— alphabet, counting, colors, direction following, etc. He’s realizing now that every thing has a name, and his eyes are always so intently watching and learning from the signing around him. Thinking back on where this boy was when he started school in August, he really has come such a long way! And only God can get the credit for Saul’s progress. My heart longs to see him begin to ask about God, and I pray that every day brings an opportunity to plant that seed in him. Chapel every morning is a vital time for this. We sing several songs and spend time praising Him. It’s amazing that even though the kids are deaf, they still are touched by music. Please also pray for wisdom in disciplining Saul when needed. It’s been a struggle from the beginning, but slowly and surely this area is improving also!
